Paid Discovery: What is it and how does it work?

Paid Discovery is StumbleUpon’s ad system. StumbleUpon’s revolutionary platform lets users surf the best of the web by Stumbling to sites that match their interests, simply by hitting a button on their browser or mobile device. With Paid Discovery, your URL (website, video, etc.) becomes part of that stream. Up to 5% of all Stumbles are reserved for Paid Discovery where you–our advertisers–directly insert your web page into the user experience. This means the right audience lands directly on your web pages, videos, and photos, just when they are in the mindset to discover something new. Users will also give you valuable feedback (thumbs up / thumbs down) on your content.

 

Paid Discovery Format

Since Paid Discovery sends visitors directly to your page, there’s no need to create an ad; your entire web page is your ad. To maintain that sense of discovery, each unique URL is displayed only once to each user. StumbleUpon doesn’t serve typical display ad formats, such as pop-ups/interstitials, banners, or other invasive forms of advertising.

Pricing

StumbleUpon recommends a price per stumble based on the targeting criteria chosen. Broad audience targeting results in a lower price per stumble while more specific targeting returns a higher price per stumble. Advertisers have the flexibility to set their own price per stumble however please note that setting a price below the recommendation may impact fulfillment. Bidding above the recommended price helps ensure serving priority for campaigns.

The pricing structure breaks down as follows:

  5. City: +6 cents

Interest Targeting
+2 cents for precise topics

Engaged Visitors
+5 cents (only charged for visitors staying on page 4 seconds or beyond)


 

Identifying a Paid Stumble

When StumbleUpon Paid Discovery delivers an ad, a green icon or “Sponsored” will appear in the toolbar or mobile app, denoting a paid Stumble. Please see below for examples:

Slide: Stumbling With More Intent

Slide enables Stumblers to preview the page being recommended as it loads in the background. With Slide, users can browse their recommended content more quickly by swiping through different web pages.

 

 

Your Sponsored web pages, like other recommended content, are inserted seamlessly into the Slide experience so that users can enjoy them as an additive part of their mobile StumbleUpon sessions. By ‘tapping’ the Slide of your Sponsored content, Stumblers now have the ability to express explicit interest in your web page which means higher quality traffic for you and a better experience for them.

 

We still serve only for engaged users which means you can continue to optimize your Paid Discovery mobile campaigns and pay only for visitors that spend meaningful time with your content.
