What version of the operating system do I need to use your app?

The StumbleUpon Android app runs on Android OS Version 1.6 and higher. However, the app will vary slightly in appearance depending on your version of Android. Additionally, certain features are only available on newer models of Android devices.

How do I get the StumbleUpon Android app?

To download the StumbleUpon App for Android, follow one of the three methods described below:

- Tap the “Play Store” icon on your Android device to be taken to the Google Play Store and type StumbleUpon in the search box
- On your Android device, open your Internet browser and visit www.stumbleupon.com and tap the link to the Google Play Store.
- On your desktop computer or device browser go to our mobile page to email yourself a link to download the app

How do I create an account on the Android app?

You will need a StumbleUpon account in order to use the StumbleUpon App. At the opening screen tap Sign Up. You can create an account three ways:

1. Create an account via our own sign-up form
This option allows you to specify what email, username and password you want for your new account then tap "Next." Use this option if you don’t have a Facebook account or if you want to keep your StumbleUpon account separate from your Facebook account.

2. Create an account via Facebook
We recommend using this option if you’re already logged in to your Facebook account on your Android device. This option makes the sign-up process faster, as it uses your Facebook data to automatically create an account (including username and password) for you. You will receive an email with your account information that you can use to login in addition to being able to sign in through Facebook.

3. Create an account via your Google account information.
Tap the  "Join with Google" button and enter your Gmail email address and password. Please note that we currently do not support Google login on the Stumbleupon.com site. To sign into the site you will need to create a password for your username. To do this go to http://www.stumbleupon.com/reset-password and enter your username or email address, a password reset email will be issued with instructions for creating a new password.

Can I message another Stumbler?

No, you can not send messages to another Stumbler through the app. The easiest way to communicate with another Stumbler is by typing a note when you’re sharing a web page with that person. You can have entire back-and-forth conversations via the “Sharing” panel (you and the other Stumbler must both be following each other first).

How do I dislike or block a web page? How do I report bad, spam and duplicate content?

If a Stumble is not interesting let us know by using the “thumb down” button. While we do our best to ensure that we’re showing you only the best web pages, once in a while you may Stumble a page with poor quality content. You can help keep our Stumble quality high by reporting these web pages to us.

Reporting from the app is easy:
1) Tap the "More” button on any web page you want to report and select "Report an Issue."
2) Select the appropriate description for the bad Stumble:

“Report as Spam” - The web page is spammy, asks you to sign up for something or has a lot of banner ads and no content at all.

“Seen Page Already” - You’ve Stumbled this before. This option is useful especially when viral copyrighted content (photos or videos) are embedded in web pages for the purpose of getting a lot of traffic.

“Page Does Not Load” - the web page doesn’t load or sends you to a 404 error page.

Read our help article Report a Bad Web Page to learn more about reporting web pages in StumbleUpon.

How safe is my information? How private is it?

Your information is never revealed or sold to third parties. We respect your concerns and value the privacy of all our members.

Why are you asking for my location information and other Android permissions?
We respect our members’ privacy and never access information unless necessary to provide a feature you are using. We also believe strongly in transparency; to that end, below are the permissions required by our app, and what each means for you:

- Your location (network based location) – This permission provides us with only an approximate location that is used to generate more geo-appropriate app recommendations. For example, this information helps us avoid recommending apps related to the transit system in San Francisco when you aren’t in the San Francisco Bay Area. We rarely access this geo-location information, nor do we track it over time or store it in any way. Whenever this information is accessed, you will see the location icon appear in the top navigation bar.
- Your personal information (read contact data) – This permission accesses your contact information if you explicitly instruct us to scan your address book to find people you know already on StumbleUpon; we never access it otherwise.
- Network communication:

- (full Internet access) – This permission enables us to access web pages we recommend, an essential part of our service.
- (view network state, view Wi-FI state) – This permission ensures an uninterrupted Stumbling experience when your phone loses over-the-air connectivity to the Internet, but a wireless connection is available.

- Storage (modify/delete SD card contents) – This permission allows for faster Stumbling by letting us load your next recommended web page while you’re viewing the current one. It also allows you to migrate the StumbleUpon app to your SD card (Android 2.2 and higher).
- Device ID (read phone state and identity) – This permission enables us to link your phone to your StumbleUpon account. It also allows us to provide better customer and technical support, especially if you initially registered for StumbleUpon through the Android app.  Finally, it thwarts spammers who attempt to register multiple accounts from the same device.
- System tools:

- (retrieve running applications) – This permission is only used if you Stumble apps. To provide more useful, personalized app recommendations, we look at the apps you already have and the apps running on your phone. The first time you Stumble apps, we will remind you of this permission with an interstitial message. We never access this information otherwise.
- (automatically start at boot) – This permission enables StumbleUpon to add a notification to your system tray when another Stumbler has shared a web page with you.
- (set wallpaper) – This permission allows you to directly save images as wallpaper that you find while Stumbling.

- Hardware controls (control flashlight, control vibrator) – This permission is used to add flash and vibrations when you receive a share sent by another Stumbler. This setting can be personalized through your phone’s general settings menu.

- NFC – This permission is required for us to support the Android Beam feature on our app. Beam relies on NFC, which is a short-range radio technology for communication between devices. For our implementation of Beam, a user can share a stumble by putting her phone back-to-back with another user’s phone.

- GET_ACCOUNTS and USE_CREDENTIALS – These permissions are used for our new Google sign in feature. Users can now sign in or sign up to Stumbleupon using their Google account. It is very important to note that we do not and in fact cannot use these permissions to ever access a user’s passwords or other sensitive information. A user’s passwords are blocked by the system.

Why does the StumbleUpon App run in the background?

The app runs in the background in order to receive notifications from the server when a connection shares a web page with you. In the settings for the app you can choose not to receive these notifications. If you are not receiving notifications, no data is used by our app. If you do receive notifications the usage is generally well under 300k per month (smaller than most web pages).

How do I install the StumbleUpon Widget?
To run the StumbleUpon widget your device must be running Android OS Version 3.2 or higher. To add the StumbleUpon Widget to your home screen tap the “+” icon on your home screen and then select “widget” from the following menu. From there swipe down until you see the StumbleUpon widget on the list and tap it. Choose a widget style and then drag the widget to where you want it on your home screen. A message will come up if there is not enough space on that screen for your widget.

How do I use Beam with the StumbleUpon App?
To share content using Android’s Beam technology you must be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and both devices must be NFC-enabled. Hold the phones back to back and touch to Beam the content.
