What is the Explore Box feature and what can I use it for?
The Explore Box is a way to Stumble through even more of what interests you.  Whenever something comes to mind, type a word or phrase into the Explore Box and we’ll show you great stuff related to your specific Interest. We’ve expanded from the 500+ Interests previously available to hundreds of thousands of Interests that you can now explore. Using the Explore Box, you can discover content about a new Interest without necessarily adding it to your permanent selection of Interests.

How do I access the Explore Box?
The Explore Box can be accessed in different ways, depending how you are accessing StumbleUpon. When using the Explore Box type in an Interest and select one of the Interests that appears from the pre-populated drop down menu. You can access the Explore Box:

-From your Home page: You’ll see the Explore Box on the right of your screen above your Interests.

- On the StumbleBar for Firefox Click on “All” on your StumbleBar and select the second option on the menu: “Explore” with the magnifying glass icon. This will take you to the Explore Box page where you can type in a specific Interest to explore.

Is “exploring” the same thing as searching?
When using the Explore Box you are not “searching” the Internet or StumbleUpon’s index of web pages.  Rather, the Explore Box uses keywords and phrases to bring you content related to a certain Interest you want to learn more about. The Explore Box is best for broad 1-3 word queries and general exploration about an Interest versus the specific results you might expect when typing a long phrase or question into a search engine.

For example, exploring the word “pugs” might bring you cute videos, guides on how to take care of pugs, or a pug breeder’s personal blog – all great web pages you might want to explore that are generally related to your term. Entering something like “how to take care of my pug” is too specific for the Explore Box and is a query that is more appropriate for a search engine. Entering short, interesting keywords will help you explore the best content around a broad Interest and find something you never would have found otherwise.

Why can’t I explore a particular Interest when I type it into the Explore Box?
The Explore Box has hundreds of thousands of Interests available to explore, but not every keyword or phrase will be available.  We limit these keywords to only those that will result in a good quality Stumbling experience and are continually adding more to those that can be explored.

Do other people see what I’m typing into the Explore Box?
No one else other than you can see the terms you enter into the Explore Box.

How do I return to Stumbling in “All Interests” or stop exploring a specific Interest?
After you’ve explored an Interest, here’s how you can return to stumbling All Interests:

- On the Chrome Extension and web-based StumbleBar: Click on the “All Interests” button in the StumbleBar (it will list the Interest you are currently stumbling) to open the “All Interests” panel. Select “All Interests” to return to normal Stumbling.

- On your Android, iPhone or iPad app: While stumbling a specific interest, tap the “Home” button to navigate to the Home screen where you can type in a new Explore Box interest or pick one of your Interests to explore.

Why is StumbleUpon running out of Stumbles to show me?
Some Explore Box terms may result in a limited amount of content, especially the more specific they get. Most of our content has been added to our Index by users, so some Interests will have more web pages than others.  Plus, we only show you content that is recommended for you based on your Interests, past Likes and past Dislikes.  If you find yourself reaching the “run out” page for that particular Explore Box interest then we’ve shown you all the recommendations we prepared for you in that Interest. We also encourage you to add web pages in that topic yourself to make the user experience better for other users and our StumbleUpon Community as a whole.

Why can’t I Stumble Adult Interests with the Explore Box?
Currently, the Explore Box does not support Stumbling Adult Interests. If you’ve previously used the Search option on the Firefox Add-on, this feature is still available only for Firefox Add-on users. You can enable it by going to Tools > Toolbar Options > Search & Tagging and check the box for Show explore / tag box.

Can I save my Explore Box keyword as an Interest for future stumbling?
Yes! Go to the Follow tab and type an Interest or tag into the Explore Box. Once you find an Interest or Tag you want to add from the Explore Box, click Follow on the tile and it will be added to your Interests.

What’s the difference between Explore Box and “stumble by tag” in the Firefox Add-on?
Stumblers using our Firefox Add-on have long enjoyed being able to Stumble by tag so they may be familiar with being able to Stumble using a keyword or phrase.  With the Explore Box we offer hundreds of thousands more Interests to explore with a larger index of content for each of those Interests delivered by improved recommendation technology.
