StumbleUpon Help Center

What is StumbleUpon?

StumbleUpon lets users surf the best of the web by “stumbling” to sites that match their interests simply by hitting a button on their browser or mobile device. Check out our quick tutorial video at or visit to stumble for yourself and see it in action.

Who uses StumbleUpon?

StumbleUpon is a service that can be used by anyone, anywhere, on any internet connected device. Over 35 million people across the globe use StumbleUpon to be surprised and delighted by interesting content from every corner of the web.

How do I create an ad?

Paid Discovery is a native advertising platform that does not use traditional ad units such as banners or text links. This means that on StumbleUpon your ad is, quite simply, your URL. Since your web page itself is the ad unit, no additional creative assets or copy are needed to drive traffic. We drive directly to your page when a user clicks the Stumble button.

How does ad targeting work?

StumbleUpon uses first party data provided by users when they sign up for an account. Ads can be targeted by age, gender, location, interest, device, and date. Ads are only shown to logged in registered users, ensuring that you’re reaching exactly the right audience.

Which edits (to existing campaigns) create new ones?

New campaigns (from edits made to existing campaign)  are created when:
  1. Age Range is changed
  2. Device is added
  3. Gender is changed
  4. Topic is changed
  5. Tracking type is changed
  6. URL is changed
  7. Price per stumble is changed
  8. Location is changed
New campaigns (from edits made to existing campaign) are NOT created when:
  1. Budget is changed
  2. Device is removed
  3. Start and End Dates changed

Where does my ad appear on StumbleUpon?

Your ad appears during a user’s stumble session. Each time they click the “Stumble” button on their StumbleUpon toolbar or mobile app, we recommend a new web page. Some of the pages they stumble upon will be from advertisers.

How do people know my page is an ad?

Ads just look like any other stumbled page and are indicated with a Sponsored label in the Stumbleupon toolbar. You can see an example of a sponsored stumble here.

Can Stumblers rate and share my ad as they do with organic pages?

Yes! Stumblers can interact with paid and organic pages in exactly the same way. This means that sponsored stumbles can be shared, thumbed up or down, added to lists, and commented on. All of this data will be available to you.

How does pricing work?

StumbleUpon operates on a cost per visit basis with every stumble being a visit to your webpage. The cost per visitor starts at 10 and goes higher. Pricing is based on targeting, serving priority, engagement, and demand.

Is it true that I can earn free stumbles in addition to what I pay for?

Yes, great content gets rewarded! While we cannot guarantee that your page will receive earned stumbles, it is common for our organic recommendation engine to send traffic to URLs which have garnered positive signals (thumbs up, shares, etc.) when served a paid stumble. Since earned stumbles happen organically, they are free of charge and will lower your effective cost per visitor. It's also worth noting that earned stumbles can continue even once your paid campaign ends.

What sort of reporting does StumbleUpon's Paid Discovery offer?

Your Paid Discovery dashboard will report on the number of stumbles (paid, unpaid, and earned), campaign score (ratio of thumbs-up to thumbs-down), average time spent, and social sharing activity. All performance stats can be broken out by age, gender, location, interest, device, and date allowing you to slice and dice data for your specific needs.

Campaigns with Standard and Premium serving priority have access to more detailed analytics about virality and engagement. You will be able to sort and group this data by age, gender, location, and device that the visitors to your campaign Stumbles received.

Is there a minimum spend requirement to be an advertiser on StumbleUpon?

There is no minimum spend requirement. Paid Discovery can accommodate budgets of all sizes.

How do I contact a sales person to discuss a custom or managed campaign?

If you’re with a brand or agency looking to invest $10K+ and would like to speak with our team, please send an email to

I set up a Paid Discovery account but did not receive a verification email. What do I do?

Please allow a few hours for the email to come through and be sure to check your spam folder. If you haven’t received a verification within 24 hours of creating your account please contact and we will verify the account for you.

I forgot my Paid Discovery password. What do I do?

Click the forgot your password link on the login page to reset your password.

How am I charged?

Paid Discovery is a prepay advertising platform. Once funds are added to your account, campaigns will draw from that balance.

How do I fund my Paid Discovery account?

Click on the Funds tab located on the homepage of your Paid Discovery dashboard. Here you can add funds to your account with a credit card, debit card, or PayPal account. You can also enable automatic funding so that your Paid Discovery account never runs out of funds.

I’m having payment problems. What can I do?

If you're having trouble with your payment it is likely a problem between the card processor and your card provider. We recommend trying the following solutions to remedy the issue:

  1. Double check that all of your information is correct and try again. The billing information must match exactly what is displayed on your bank statement.
  2. Contact your bank to make sure they are not preventing the transaction from going through.
  3. Try a different payment method such as a PayPal account rather than a credit card.

How do I get a receipt for my transactions?

You will receive an email receipt each time funds are deposited into your Paid Discovery account. To submit a special request for a receipt, please email to with your Paid Discovery account email address.

How do I get a refund?

If you would like to apply for a refund of a partial or full amount of your account balance, please submit the following form:

Do my ads go through a review process?

Campaigns submitted by new advertisers undergo a review process which normally takes a few hours on weekdays. Established advertisers will have their campaign go live within 5 - 15 minutes of submission.

Does StumbleUpon optimize the serving of my ad?

Yes, your campaign is automatically optimized to serve to stumblers that are most likely to be receptive. That’s the beauty of having a recommendation engine power ad serving.

Can I control my campaigns in real time?

Yes, the Paid Discovery dashboard is self serve and you’re able to control everything in real time.

Can I pre-schedule my campaigns to run over a certain time frame?

Yes you can schedule campaigns to run over any date range you’d like. You’re also able to set your budget by day for the lifetime of the flight.

Can I control exactly how many visits I send to a particular URL?

By changing your  budget, you can control how many visits are sent to particular pages.

I am getting an error when I submit my URL. What do I do?

First, check the error message on the page in case it offers any hints about the problem. If you think you have mistyped your URL, please enter it again. If problems persist, please email

Why is my campaign not receiving any stumbles?

First, ensure that your Paid Discovery account has a balance since campaigns cannot run without funds in the account. Next, check that your account’s max daily budget is not preventing your campaign budget from serving. Lastly, ensure that the campaign does not have a start date in the future or an end date in the past and that the campaign state is set to active.

Can I have multiple campaigns under the same URL?

Yes, many of our advertisers have multiple campaigns for the same page.

How can I quickly make campaigns for many URLs?

If you plan to create multiple campaigns with the same targeting criteria the template feature allows you to save targeting info and apply it to future campaigns. Templates are optional but they can be quite helpful in speeding up the campaign creation process.

How do I stop a campaign?

Any active campaign can just be stopped via the Manage tab by clicking the Pause or Archive icon.

My campaigns are under-delivering. What can I do?

Your targeting may be too granular to reach your desired daily budget. Try broadening the target audience in order to gain more reach. You can also raise your bid to increase serving priority over other advertisers.

How frequently does Paid Discovery reporting update?

Stats on your Paid Discovery homepage update every few minutes. The Reporting section updates every few hours.

Does StumbleUpon offer third-party tracking?

The Paid Discovery dashboard will report on all stumble activity but if you’d like to use redirect services such as or DoubleClick for additional click tracking, we can accomodate it for paid stumbles. Please send an email to to enable redirects for your account. You may also append tracking parameters to your URL. Simply enter the full URL into the text box on the campaign creation form and indicate which of the parameters are used for tracking purposes.
